Endodontics

What is Endodontics?

Endodontic treatment aims to prevent infections of the inner part of the tooth, nerve or root, which can be potentially dangerous to oral health.

Commonly known as ‘root canal’ or devitalisation, this specialty of dentistry is indicated when inflammation in tooth tissue has already reached its nerve structure.

Treatment stages

Root canal treatment aims to ensure that the tissue covering the tooth regains its healthy state.

Removing the tissue
The start of treatment consists in removing the part of the tooth that is inflamed.
Cleaning
The channel is then cleaned to receive the filling.
Sterilisation
The dentist sterilises the tooth canal and fills it with an appropriate filling so that the tooth regains its healthy state.
Crown
In some cases, a crown may be placed to give the tooth a more natural appearance.
Causes
There are several types of causes associated to the need for this type of treatment.
Trauma
Traumatic dental injuries can result from falls, sports or other activities that may compromise one or more teeth.
Fractures
Dental fractures are usually caused by trauma and can range from a simple enamel fracture to permanent tooth loss.
Deep Cavities
In the most acute cases of cavities, discomfort, tooth sensitivity, bad breath and severe pain may appear.

Risk of Inflammation

Postponing a visit to the dentist will increase the risk of tooth inflammation. In this case, in addition to suffering severe pain, the only viable solution for the patient may be tooth extraction.

Devitalisation

The devitalisation of a tooth requires different stages of intervention and can be completed in one consultation or several, depending on the severity of the dental problem.
